Redesign the site
without losing the rankings.
The most common way a Perth business loses its search traffic is not a Google update. It is a redesign where the URLs changed and nobody mapped the old ones to the new ones. It is entirely preventable, it is invisible work, and almost nobody quotes for it. We do it before launch, as part of the build.
A redesign is probably worth it if
- The site was built before mobile mattered, and most of your visitors are now on a phone.
- People find you, read a page, and leave without ringing. The traffic is there and the enquiries are not.
- You cannot update it yourself, or the person who built it is no longer contactable.
- It loads slowly enough that you have noticed it yourself on your own phone.
- Your services have changed and the site still describes work you stopped doing two years ago.
- It was built on a platform you are renting, and leaving means rebuilding anyway.
If none of those are true and it is just that the design feels dated, say so on the call. Sometimes the honest answer is fixing speed or two pages of copy rather than spending thousands on a rebuild. Run the current site through the free website check first — it takes about ten seconds and needs no email address.
What actually goes wrong in a redesign
None of these are exotic. Every one of them is something we have seen on a site that came to us after someone else rebuilt it, and every one is cheap to prevent and expensive to fix six months later.
URLs changed with no redirects
The big one. /services/electrical becomes /what-we-do/electrical, the old address 404s, and the ranking it held goes with it.
Content removed in a tidy-up
A page nobody liked gets cut without anyone checking what it was earning. Search Console knows; the tidy-up usually does not ask.
Titles rewritten wholesale
Improving a title is fine. Removing the words you were found for is not, and it is easy to do while making a page read better.
Launched with noindex still on
Genuinely common, and it means days of total invisibility before somebody notices the phone has gone quiet.
The staging site got indexed
Left open to crawlers, then it competes with the real site using the same content.
Slower than what it replaced
A prettier site that takes four seconds to load is a worse site. See website speed.
The checklist version, including the launch-day steps we work from, is written up in redesign your website without losing rankings. It is deliberately detailed enough to hand to whoever you end up hiring, including if that is not us.
How we run a redesign
-
1
Measure what you have first
We crawl the current site and pull your page list and click data from Search Console. That tells us which pages are earning their keep and must survive the rebuild. You cannot protect what nobody listed.
-
2
Agree what keeps its URL
Anything with traffic or links keeps its address, its title wording and the phrases it ranks for. Everything else is free to change. This is a ten-minute conversation that prevents the most expensive mistake in the project.
-
3
Build alongside the live site
Your current site stays up and earning while the new one is built on a staging URL that is closed to crawlers. Nothing goes dark mid-project.
-
4
Map every redirect before launch
Every old URL gets a 301 to its closest equivalent, in one hop, not a blanket redirect to the homepage — Google treats that as a soft 404 and it passes nothing.
-
5
Launch, then verify
We check the live HTML for noindex rather than trusting a CMS setting, test the old URL list in bulk, and submit the new sitemap to Search Console and Bing.
-
6
Watch the first month
A two-to-four week wobble is normal. 404s appearing in Search Console’s Page indexing report are not, and they are almost always a redirect that was missed. We check weekly for the first month.
The wider build sequence, with timings and payment milestones, is on the process page.

A redesign is quoted from the same bands as a new build, because it is the same work with a redirect map attached. Content that already exists and does not need rewriting often moves a job down a band rather than up one. Every price is published on the pricing page, including the payment-plan figures.
