WordPress or custom-built?
The honest answer.

For most Perth trade businesses, WordPress is the right choice. It is cheaper to build, easier to edit yourself, and any developer can pick it up if we part ways. Custom-built wins when speed and security genuinely matter, when you need something WordPress does awkwardly, or when you have been burned by plugin maintenance before. We build both, and we will tell you which one your job actually needs.

Side by side

  WordPress Custom-built
Upfront cost Lower. Mature themes and plugins mean less to build from scratch. Higher. Everything is written for you specifically.
Editing it yourself Strong. A visual editor most people can learn in an afternoon. Depends entirely on what was built. Can be excellent or can need a developer.
Speed Adequate to slow. Plugins accumulate and each one adds weight. Fast. Nothing loads that you did not ask for.
Security The main drawback. Plugins are the most common way sites get compromised, and they need updating forever. Much smaller attack surface. No plugin ecosystem, no XML-RPC, nothing to exploit but your own code.
Ongoing maintenance Real and permanent. Core, theme and plugin updates, monthly, or you fall behind. Minimal. PHP version updates and not much else.
Finding another developer Easy. Enormous talent pool worldwide. Harder. A competent developer can read it, but it is not a skill you hire off a shelf.
Unusual requirements Usually a plugin exists. Sometimes three, all half-right. Built exactly to the requirement, no compromise.

WordPress is the better answer when

  • You want to add photos, update prices and write posts yourself without calling anyone.
  • Budget is the binding constraint and you need the most site for the money.
  • You want the freedom to hand it to any developer in the world later.
  • Your requirements are ordinary — services, gallery, contact, blog. That is what WordPress is genuinely good at.
  • You are willing to pay for managed hosting so the updates actually get done.

Custom-built is the better answer when

  • Speed matters commercially — you are competing on search and every second counts.
  • You have been hacked before, or the site handles anything sensitive.
  • You need something specific that WordPress only does awkwardly, like unusual booking logic or a customer portal.
  • You do not intend to edit it much, so the editing advantage is worth little to you.
  • You want the smallest possible maintenance burden over five years.

Our honest take

If you are a solo operator or a small crew and you want to be able to change things yourself, take WordPress and put the saving into managed hosting so the updates actually happen. That combination serves most trade businesses well for years. Choose custom when you have a specific reason — not because it sounds more professional. For what it is worth, this website is hand-built PHP rather than WordPress, because we sell performance and security and it would be strange not to hold ourselves to it. That is a reason that applies to us, not automatically to you.

Common questions

Is WordPress bad for SEO?
No. That myth comes from badly built WordPress sites, which are common because the barrier to entry is low. WordPress can rank extremely well. What hurts SEO is a bloated theme, twenty plugins and no page structure — and you can build a custom site badly too.
Will a custom site be faster?
Almost always, yes, because nothing loads that you did not ask for. Whether that difference is worth the extra cost depends on how competitive your market is. For an emergency trade in a busy metro market it can matter; for a specialist with little competition it usually does not.
What about Wix or Squarespace?
A different comparison, and we wrote it: Wix or Squarespace versus a built site. Short version — they are genuinely fine for a new or very small business, and the limit is structural rather than cosmetic, because a page per service per suburb is painful enough on a builder that most people never finish it. If your question is really who should do the work rather than what to build on, that is DIY versus hiring someone.
Can I move from WordPress to custom later?
Yes, and it is a normal thing to do. Your content comes across and the URLs can be preserved with redirects so you keep your rankings. Budget for it as a rebuild rather than a migration, because in practice that is what it is.
